Tip credit overtime is one of the easiest payroll calculations to get wrong. The employer may be allowed to claim a tip credit, but the overtime rate still starts with the full minimum wage or regular rate.

The federal example is simple: $7.25 x 1.5 equals $10.875, then the maximum $5.12 tip credit is subtracted to find the minimum cash overtime rate.

Calculate tipped overtime

If you are a server, bartender, delivery worker, or restaurant employee, estimate overtime using your cash wage, tips, and state minimum wage.

Tip credit overtime formula

Overtime rate before tip credit = full minimum wage x 1.5

Cash overtime rate = overtime rate before tip credit - allowed tip credit

Total cash overtime = cash overtime rate x overtime hours

State differences

Some states limit or prohibit tip credits. That can make server overtime higher than the federal baseline. Compare your result with the state overtime calculator hub.
